Why aviation English is not the same as business English

IWG Institute's English for Aviation program is a practical communication training designed for aviation professionals working in safety-critical, internationally regulated environments. The program focuses on the real communication situations aviation teams face — ICAO-standard radiotelephony, emergency and abnormal procedures communication, technical documentation, crew briefings, and coordination across multilingual teams. Training is available as B2B group programs, 1:1 coaching, online, onsite or in a hybrid mode.

Aviation is one of the most language-regulated industries in the world. ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements exist because communication failures have been a factor in serious incidents and accidents. Yet many aviation professionals — even experienced ones — operate in English at a level that is functional rather than precise. The gap between getting by and communicating with full clarity under pressure is exactly where risk lives.

Generic English training doesn't close that gap. IWG Institute's English for Aviation is built around the communication situations that aviation professionals actually face — from routine ATC exchanges to high-pressure emergency declarations, from pre-flight technical briefings to written maintenance reports.

    • Radiotelephony communication — standard phraseology and plain language when required
    • Emergency and abnormal procedure communication under pressure
    • Crew resource management — assertiveness, questioning, and closed-loop communication
    • Technical briefings and handover communication with ground crews and engineers
    • Written documentation — technical logs, incident reports, maintenance records
    • Communicating with international crews, ATC, and ground handling across language barriers

    What the program covers

    MODULE 1

    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions

Who is this program designed for?+
This program is designed for aviation professionals who use English in safety-critical, internationally regulated work environments — including commercial and business aviation pilots, air traffic controllers, cabin crew, aviation maintenance technicians, ground operations staff, and aviation managers. It is especially relevant for professionals operating in international environments, working with multilingual crews, or preparing for ICAO language proficiency assessments.
What level of English do participants need?+
Participants should have a working level of English — roughly A2 or above on the CEFR scale. The program is not a beginner course. It is designed for aviation professionals who already function in English but want to operate with greater precision, clarity, and confidence — especially in non-routine and high-pressure situations. Participants who are unsure of their level can contact IWG Institute for a brief assessment call before enrolling.
    How is the program structured?+
The program is delivered in sessions spaced to allow participants to apply and consolidate learning between each one. The number of sessions and schedule are agreed with the client organisation to fit crew rostering, operational requirements, and training schedules. Sessions can be delivered in-person, online, or in a hybrid format — and can be integrated into existing recurrent training programs where relevant.
Does this program prepare participants for ICAO language proficiency tests?+
Yes. The program addresses all six ICAO Language Proficiency descriptors: pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and interactions. While IWG Institute does not administer ICAO tests, the coaching is designed to strengthen the communication skills that ICAO assessors evaluate — particularly in plain language situations, non-routine events, and extended interactions. Many participants use the program specifically to move from ICAO Level 4 to Level 5 or 6.
Is training available online or only in Helsinki?+
Training is available both in person and fully online via video platform. In-person training is available at the company's premises, including Helsinki, Espoo, Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Pori, Jyväskylä, Lahti, Kuopio, and Vaasa. Online delivery is identical in quality to in-person training — IWG Institute's trainers are experienced in delivering high-engagement aviation English training in virtual environments.
Can the program be customised for our specific operation?+
Yes. All B2B programs are customised to the client's operational context — fleet type, route network, ATC environment, maintenance operations, or ground handling procedures. Before the program begins, IWG Institute conducts a needs assessment to understand the specific communication situations participants face. The scenarios, phraseology focus, and exercises are built around your operation. This is one of the key differences between IWG Institute's approach and generic aviation English courses.
