The challenge

From basic German to confident workplace communication

Business German: Intermediate is a practical course for professionals in Finland who have completed a beginner German course or have an equivalent foundation, and now want to put that German to more consistent, confident use in their workplace. The course is taught in Finnish and focuses on spoken communication, professional vocabulary development, and building the language skills to handle a wider range of business situations in German. Available as B2B group courses, 1:1 coaching, online, onsite or in a hybrid mode.

Getting to a basic level in German is one thing. Using it reliably at work is another. Many professionals find that after a beginner course, their German is there in principle but hesitant in practice — they understand more than they can produce, their professional vocabulary for their own industry is limited, and situations that require more than a few standard phrases still feel uncertain. This gap between knowing German and using it is exactly where Business German: Intermediate begins.

The course builds directly on the foundations of beginner German, expanding the vocabulary and structures participants already have into the range of situations their work actually requires. The emphasis is on spoken communication and practical use: describing work, products and services in more depth, handling client and partner situations more confidently, managing meetings and calls, and writing professional emails and messages in German. All instruction is in Finnish, so explanations are clear and the learning effort goes entirely into German.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What level of German do participants need to start this course?+
Participants should have a basic foundation in German — approximately A1–A2 on the CEFR scale, or the equivalent of having completed a beginner German course. They should be able to handle simple professional interactions in German, even if a wider range of workplace situations still feels uncertain. Participants who have studied German informally or in a classroom setting some time ago are also well suited to this course. Those with no prior German should start with Business German: Beginner.
Why is the course taught in Finnish?+
Finnish is the most direct route to clear understanding for Finnish-speaking learners of German. Grammar explanations land faster, vocabulary is retained more effectively, and participants can ask questions precisely in their own language. All instruction, explanations, and classroom discussion are in Finnish so that the learning effort goes into German, not into following the lesson.
What will participants be able to do by the end of the course?+
By the end of the course, participants will be able to describe their work, company, and its products or services in greater depth; use professional vocabulary relevant to their role and industry; participate in workplace conversations on familiar topics; handle common client and partner situations; arrange meetings and practical matters; manage simple phone calls and online meetings; and write typical workplace emails and short messages in German. Participants will also use German language structures with greater confidence and have a clear path towards more independent professional communication. IWG Institute can discuss realistic outcomes for a specific team based on starting level, session frequency, and course duration.
Can the content be tailored to our industry?+
Yes. The vocabulary, scenarios, and communication exercises are adapted to the client organisation's industry, products or services, and the specific German-language business situations participants face. Before the course begins, IWG Institute conducts a needs assessment to understand what matters most for the team.
