Business Chinese: Beginner 1. Where Mandarin Starts.

Business Chinese: Beginner 1 is the first course in IWG Institute's three-part foundational series, building the skills professionals need to use Chinese in working life step by step. The course is taught in Finnish and focuses on Mandarin pronunciation, tones, and the pinyin system — establishing the sound foundation that all later progress depends on. It covers the key basic structures and most common vocabulary of the language, introduces Chinese characters and the principles behind how they are formed and read, and familiarises participants with the basics of Chinese communication culture. Available as B2B group courses, 1:1 coaching, or onsite programs at the company's premises, including Helsinki, Espoo, Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Jyväskylä, Vaasa, Kuopio, Lahti, or fully online.

The challenge

Chinese takes time — so the foundation has to be right

Business Chinese: Beginner 1 is the first part of a three-course foundational series designed for professionals in Finland who need to build Chinese language skills for working life. The course is taught in Finnish and establishes the sound foundation — pronunciation, tones, and pinyin — on which all further progress depends. Available as B2B group courses, 1:1 coaching, online, onsite or in a hybrid mode.

Mandarin Chinese is not a language that can be rushed. The tones carry meaning, the writing system works on entirely different principles from European languages, and the communication culture has its own conventions. This is precisely why IWG Institute delivers the foundational level across three courses rather than one: the groundwork needs to be laid properly before anything can be built on it. A learner who gets the tones wrong in the first weeks carries that error into every conversation afterwards.

Beginner 1 establishes that groundwork. It focuses on getting pronunciation, tones, and the pinyin system right from the start; on the core structures and vocabulary that everything else builds on; and on the first encounter with Chinese characters and how they work. Participants also become familiar with the basics of Chinese communication culture — the foundation for the cultural awareness developed further in Beginner 2 and 3. All instruction is in Finnish, so explanations are precise and the learning effort goes entirely into Chinese.

What the course covers

MODULE 1
Pronunciation, Tones & Pinyin
The sound foundation of Mandarin Chinese. The four tones learned systematically and practised until reliable, the pinyin romanisation system, and correct pronunciation established from the very first session — before habits form that are difficult to correct later.
MODULE 2
Core Structures & Everyday Vocabulary
The key basic structures of Chinese and how to form simple sentences. The most common vocabulary for everyday use: greeting and introducing oneself, talking about oneself and others, numbers, times, and dates — the building blocks every later course depends on.
MODULE 3
First Chinese Characters
An introduction to Chinese characters and the basic principles behind how they are formed and read. Participants learn to recognise the most common characters and understand the logic of the writing system — the first step toward reading Chinese rather than only speaking it.
MODULE 4
Everyday Situations & Communication Culture
Simple everyday interaction and service situations in Chinese. Alongside the language, participants become familiar with the basics of Chinese communication culture — laying the groundwork for the politeness levels and indirect communication explored in Beginner 2, and the hierarchy and relationship-building norms covered in Beginner 3.

Business Chinese: Beginner 1 is the first of three foundational courses. It is designed for participants starting at A0 with no prior knowledge of Chinese. All instruction is in Finnish. Content is adapted to the organisation's industry and the professional context participants work in.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does a participant need any Chinese before starting this course?+
No. Business Chinese: Beginner 1 is designed for participants starting at absolute zero — no prior knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is required. It is the first course in a three-part foundational series, beginning with pronunciation, tones, and the pinyin system before moving into basic structures, everyday vocabulary, and a first introduction to Chinese characters.
Why are there three beginner courses instead of one?+
Mandarin Chinese requires a more carefully built foundation than most European languages. The tones carry meaning, the writing system works on entirely different principles, and the communication culture has its own conventions. Compressing all of this into a single beginner course produces learners who recognise Chinese but cannot use it. IWG Institute delivers the foundational level across three courses — Beginner 1, 2, and 3 — so that each stage is properly consolidated before the next begins. Participants then continue to Business Chinese: Intermediate, the working-life program where the focus shifts towards professional application.
Do participants learn Chinese characters on this course?+
Yes, as an introduction. Beginner 1 introduces Chinese characters and the basic principles behind how they are formed and read, and participants learn to recognise the most common characters. Pinyin remains the primary tool for pronunciation and early written practice at this stage. Character knowledge is developed further in Beginner 2 and 3.
Why is the course taught in Finnish?+
Finnish is the most direct route to clear understanding for Finnish-speaking learners of Chinese. Mandarin tones, pronunciation, and grammar work very differently from Finnish or European languages — and explaining these differences precisely in Finnish is faster and more effective than working through another foreign language. All instruction, explanations, and classroom discussion are in Finnish so that the learning effort goes into Chinese, not into following the lesson.
Can the content be tailored to our industry?+
Yes. Beginner 1 builds the foundations of the language itself, but the vocabulary examples, practice situations, and professional context are adapted to the client organisation's industry and the Chinese-language business situations the team will eventually face. Before the course begins, IWG Institute conducts a needs assessment to understand what matters most. Industry-specific content increases progressively across Beginner 2 and 3 and becomes the primary focus in Business Chinese: Intermediate.
How do we get started?+
